Hello!
Are either of you going anywhere for Spring Break? If not, are either of you interested in possibly working ahead this week on the following week's assignments? It looks like we will have a reading reflection, a revised concept map, and each a lesson plan to do that week. I don't mind remaking the final revised concept map since I am familiar with the program. Ideas for what we should revise from our original concept map? For the lesson plan, write below what it is you will be doing and a small description so we each know who is doing what exactly so as not to repeat anything.

To Remove:
I noticed that there are kind of two separate things for the prop/artifacts segment. Should we combine these somehow?
To Add: Technology (what are students doing their project/research on? - e.g. Google Drive); Formative assessment (ideas for it too);
where it says types of sources, I think we should add the types of sources. Right now it just says biography vs autobiography. Maybe we should add things like, newspapers (microfilm), vital records, census records, books about an event or the town, etc.
--I agree. When I said biography vs. autobiography, I was thinking just so students would discern they are different and to determine which they were writing for their projects. I think those sources should definitely be added on.

**What do you think of organizing the concept map around the different stages of the project? Planning, implementation, assessment, etc. so there is a more organized flow?
Lesson Plan 2:
Taylor: Data collection on how old each student's historical figure was when they were most active / significantly contributing to Kalamazoo's history (in brackets of 10 - e.g. 10s 20s 30s 40s 50s etc.)
Lesson Plan 2:
Taylor: Data collection on how old each student's historical figure was when they were most active / significantly contributing to Kalamazoo's history (in brackets of 10 - e.g. 10s 20s 30s 40s 50s etc.)
Bethany: Data collection on where each student's historical figure was from PRIOR to settling in Kalamazoo - to see how far and wide people came to be a part of Kalamazoo's community?
Amanda:
Artifacts from the lifetime of each student's historical figure.
What were the artifacts? What materials were used in the creation of the original artifact? (This will help the students with the creation of their own artifact replicas, in making them realistic and relevant.)
I don't mind working ahead, but this week I am picking up a lot of extra hours at work, so I won't have a significant amount of time!
ReplyDeleteI'll be around, but also working and trying to catch up on housework and homework. Shoot me a text if you have ideas or want to go over stuff.
ReplyDeleteIf either of you think of things we should add or remove from our Concept Map, just jot it down above and we can look at it then or just comment on here if you have any ideas. Bethany, I really like your topic idea for your lesson plan 2!
ReplyDeleteThanks Taylor! :)
DeleteHello all! Just as a note, Professor Peterson said that someone other than the person who originally submitted the concept map needs to submit it this time. I will gladly do it for our group. Taylor, if you still would like to do it, feel free, or I can as well. Either way, I will submit it and post it to our blog once it is done!
ReplyDeleteOkay, sounds good, Bethany! I was not aware of that. Thank you! bubble.us (if that is what you choose to use) is very user-friendly
DeleteNo worries! Is there a way to share an already created concept map? If so, that might be the easiest way to change things up if I were to complete it!
DeleteThanks Bethany!!! I didn't notice that detail.
ReplyDeleteI think for the concept map we should also expand on Assessments. What kind of formative assessments should we do? Ideas?
ReplyDeleteI think our plans for checking in on the students, types of questions we will ask them to monitor their learning, and platforms for keeping track of dates should be included.
DeleteFor when the event is, should we add something about how many class periods it will take up?
ReplyDeleteFor making props, should we have students create some type of a trifold or poster board? Then should we connect this trifold/posterboard to picture so that students include pictures of the historical figure and any other pictures connected to the significance of their historical figure?
ReplyDeleteI think the props should be more like replicas (as close as a student can do) of the persons artifacts. I think it would make it feel more"authentic" if they used their surroundings and "artifacts" to really understand and get into character
DeleteEven clothing could fit into props I would think, fake facial hair, wigs, furniture...
DeleteI agree. But what about for students where making an artifact could be really difficult? Such as a large medical artifact or something? I guess in this case, students could draw or print out a "sketch" to show their audience an idea for their invention?
DeleteWe should add fake facial hair/wigs and furniture to our props in our concept map.
DeleteI agree with Amanda that the prop should be a close replica of the actual artifact. There are a variety of ways that students could do it as well, and we could leave it up to their creativity. For instance, I remember in high school I made a prop for an in class play out of a wrapping paper tube and paper mache. So for this project, for example, if a student is portraying an artist of some sort, they could make their own version of one of their pieces?
DeleteI definitely agree we should incorporate what we are doing for assessments - formative assessment especially. What are you thinking of adding on for this portion? I think that we should outline the amount of time we are allotting in class for the project as well.
I also agree with your addition to our props portion in the concept map.
I agree. Letting students be creative in their rendition of the artifacts would work well into the PBL setting. Maybe they will see a,detail or another meaningful artifact we never thought of, or maybe it'll bring out the inner artist or craftsman?
DeleteI think a large part of the assessment could be participation. Are they participating and to what degree? Are they contributing or showing up and sitting like a bump on a log? Are they completing the tasks assigned them in a quality manner or are they putting duct tape on a toilet paper tube and calling it a sword? Hopefully I'm making some type of sense...sleep deprivation makes things sound good in my head but doesn't necessarily come out as intended.
ReplyDeleteI follow you completely! I think that if students are meaningfully engaged and participating that will tell us a lot about whether or not they are learning and what they are learning.
DeleteBethany, I just shared the concept map A with you via email.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeletePlease see the post above for a list of changes I have compiled based on the suggestions in the comments.
ReplyDeleteI love the list of changes you have compiled above. I like your idea about organizing the concept map for each phase of the project instead - I think it will be easier to follow in that way. I think it will be great! I think you could add allotted time to each phase of the project.
DeleteGood idea, Taylor! Thanks for that suggestion! Do we have anything that is on the existing concept map that we feel we could cut out?
DeleteI think you could just condense and reorganize it. We can look after you make it to see what needs to be cut or you can always use your best judgment when making it what isn't needed?
DeleteI think to the artifacts we should add "relevant". I do like your idea for reorganizing the concept map.
ReplyDeleteOkay! Thank you both for your feedback. I will work on it tonight and have it posted by tomorrow for our review!
